The day is finally here! This Thursday morning, we’ll dedicate the Crop Box on the campus of Academy of the Holy Cross in Kensington — a joint partnership of the Center for Urban Sustainability Projects, Academy of the Holy Cross, and John S. Mulholland Family Foundation, Inc. On Friday, students from AHC will deliver a portion of the first “harvest” to a JSM Food Pantry in Southeast Washington.
This project is made possible through the vision and generosity of JSM Director Leah V. Durant, who is also the founder of CUSP, as well as Law Offices of Leah V. Durant, PLLC.
The Crop Box accomplishes three objectives: to produce environmentally friendly, hydroponic fruit and vegetables in an urban environment in a state of the art, futuristic facility, free of chemicals; to provide course education to the students on urban food sustainability, which will be the norm, not the exception, in their lives; and, finally, to provide healthy produce to the 1,000 food insecure, working poor families JSM serves monthly in the District of Columbia.
