(Washington, DC) March 19, 2014 – The John S. Mulholland Family Foundation, Inc. (www.jsmff.org) has announced that eight Washington Area Catholic High Schools have elected to participate in the 2014 Lenten High School Challenge.
The schools – Georgetown Visitation, Gonzaga College High School, and Archbishop Carroll, in the District of Columbia – and Academy of the Holy Cross, Georgetown Preparatory, St. Vincent Pallotti, Bishop McNamara and Elizabeth Seton, in suburban Maryland – have all committed to “one can, one dollar” as part of the student’s Lenten sacrifice.
These donations are in addition to the significant service projects already in place at each of the The John S. Mulholland Family Foundation, Inc. was founded last year to aid in feeding the hungry poor in the District of Columbia. Specifically, the Foundation stocks the already existing food pantries of two inner city parishes, Assumption Church in SE and Holy Name Church in NE with canned goods collected from schools, churches, civic organizations and corporations. Monetary donations are used to purchase perishable items not typically offered, such as dairy and produce.
The Foundation, and the individual pantries, serves individuals and families in the 6th of the District regardless of religion or station. These neighborhoods have poverty and hunger rates “The incredible generosity and commitment to service exhibited by these young men and women, and the unconditional support of their school presidents and faculty, have been an inspiration not only to the Foundation, but to the parish food pantries we serve,” stated JSM Chairman Brian M. Mulholland. “We are hopeful this experience further solidifies the living Gospel instilled in the students by each of their extraordinary schools,” he continued.
