Our 5th Annual Summer in the City is underway (see separate article). We will collect from more than 30 churches throughout the region between now and Labor Day. As I write this in mid-June , we are already at 15% of our goal of 80,000 cans!

Of course, this is the essence of what we do. Each year, we collect and deliver around 150,000 cans. In addition to the 80,000 during the summer, we collect 20,000 during the Greg Gannon Canned Food Drive in December, another 20,000 during Lent, another 20,000 from our high schools and the rest from corporate donors. There are a couple of valleys in early October and in mid-May, but otherwise we remain pretty well stocked. Providing supplemental food assistance to more than 750 families each month is a big deal and we rely on our friends to help.

Then there are the fresh food deliveries which occur weekly. It seems we are always at the grocery store…produce, milk and eggs, chicken, hot dogs, etc. It’s all good and very joyful.

While we are doing this, we are working hard to make A 5 STAR CAPITAL EVENING a great success. We hope you will mark your calendars for Friday, November 30th and join us at the Capital Hilton. Thanks to this years Gala Co-Chairs, Dr. Tom Anzelmo, David Gardiner and Gina Ross for taking the helm. The fabulous Radio King Orchestra returns by popular demand and we have a great evening planned. (See separate article). Will you join us?

It’s hard to believe we are in our 5th year serving the working poor of the District of Columbia. Two things are for sure: The challenges the poor face each and every day are not going away anytime soon; and, we could not possibly do what we do without your continued support.

And so, we thank you.
